A road through the forest is agreed
After Brookvale Park's February 2018 en-bloc sale, a mandatory traffic study and discussions with LTA lead the Ki Residences developer to agree to build a new 1.2 km road — Brookvale Drive — connecting Sunset Way to Clementi Road, through the forest's edge.

Field surveys for the Cross Island Line EIA
AECOM (appointed by LTA) surveyed biodiversity across Clementi and Maju Forests from November 2019 to March 2020, for the Cross Island Line Phase 2 EIA. That assessment recorded Maju Forest at 33.2 ha — the earlier study the 2026 EIA refers back to.

Cross Island Line EIA — public feedback
The CRL Phase 2 EIA was open for public feedback from October to November 2022 (13 responses, plus open letters from SG Youth Voices for Biodiversity and the “Nature & Us” weblog); LTA published its response on 19 September 2023. This feedback concerned the Cross Island Line — not the housing plan — though the 2026 EIA cites it.

Brookvale Drive opens — the forest's first cut
The new road opens after five years in the making. About 3.6 hectares of forest were cut down to make way for it — by the Straits Times' count, about 14.4 per cent of Maju Forest.

Aurecon appointed for the housing EIA
NParks, on behalf of HDB, appoints Aurecon to carry out the Environmental Impact Assessment at Sunset Way (the ~23 ha study area).

The formal EIA feedback window closed. HDB's general write-to-us channel stayed open — and residents urged HDB to reopen the formal window.

Plans to be adjusted — more greenery retained
After discussions with nature groups, MOS Alvin Tan announces further adjustments to the plans for Sunset Way and Gillman Barracks: more forested area is to be retained, with nature groups urging a wider green corridor. The finalised plan is due in the coming months.

Residents' engagement session with HDB
Over 130 residents met MPs Christopher de Souza and Sim Ann and the agencies (HDB, NParks, URA) at Ulu Pandan CC. HDB confirmed it now plans to retain about 8 ha (35%) of the forest, but the resident who asked point-blank was told the site will be developed. Residents pressed on the rushed EIA, the climate contradiction, and whether the housing is needed at all. The session ran nearly three hours.

A detailed Environmental Management & Monitoring Plan, tender and clearance would follow. The final configuration is not settled — Master Plans have been redrawn before, and public voice still counts.

More than 2,000 people gathered at Hong Lim Park in response to a month of plans affecting Maju Forest, Gillman Barracks, Sembawang, Tengah and Tagore — an afternoon of community booths, speeches, poetry and song in red and green.
